DIKE HOUSE

Client : Municipality of Almere
Site : Almere, Netherlands (10 ha)
Programme : 100 apartments,
150 individual houses, 248pp
Type : competition, finalist

The site (250m x 2km) is covered by a 30 year old forest, planted by the city for keeping the ground healthy. The short side of the site borders the Markermeer.
We developed two types of housing for the site. One is a block of 4 stories along the water containing 10 different types of maisonette apartments - Dike House. The Dike House is raised on pilotis and placed on a grass surface wich reaches the water and becomes a beach deck. This public space connects the underground parking and the dwellings above. Every house has views to two sides, towards water and forest.
The other housing type is family houses of 2 floors grouped around a communal raised courtyard deck inside the forest - Tree House. Built around the strict grid of the planted trees, the raised level of the Tree House creates a semi-private communal space for the inhabitants within the public space of the forest.
